    Roulette Glossary



    A layout bet - A bet placed on the table wherever it is numbered.

    American Wheel - Name given to Roulette wheel with 38 different slots, containing a 0 and a 00 and sequential numbers from 1 to 36.

    Buole (La Boule) - it is also called the “little game”. Boule is found in French casinos and is a simpler version of the Roulette. In this game, the wheel has 9 numbers and also has 3 different colors as well and along with it there is also a table. Betting is done on the numbers and on the colors as well. The game comprises of bouncing a rubber ball in the wheel. The outcome of the bet will depend on which colored slot the ball settles into. This makes this game a very quick one.

    Call bets - the other name for this is “Roulette Announced Bets”. This is quite common in European and French casinos and as well as in UK casinos where the roulette tables consist of a single 0 number. These games have 5 different types of betting schemes: Number neighbors (Voisin du nombre, bet of 5 chips), A third section of the wheel (Tiers du cylinder, a bet of 6 chips), Zero neighbors (Voisins du zero, a bet of 9 chips), Full orphans (Orphelin plein, a bet of 8 chips), Orphans split (Orphelin cheval, a bet of 5 chips).

    Carre - A Corner bet in French.

    Cheval - A split bet in French.

    Corner bet - a bet consisting of four numbers.

    Column bet - An outside bet and a long division of the layout. (Among three different long versions)

    Dolly - this is different between the French roulette and the American Roulette. In the French version you have croupier takes a stick and points to the numbers on the table, which has come out as the winning combination. In the American version, the croupier takes a wooden or plastic marker and places then on the numbered squares marking them as the winning numbers. The term “dolly” is given to the marker due to its similarity with a doll. This marker is used to help the players notify about the winning outcomes of the bets until all the winning payouts are cleared.

    Dozen bet - a set of dozen numbers among the 36 numbers that are on the layout. This is also an outside bet.

    En plein - A straight up bet called in French.

    En prison - this is a phrase in French. This is a rule that is applied to all the even money bets. Due to this rule applied in situations when the outcome of a bet is 0. In this situation the casino either returns half of the bet or blocks the amount (prison) for another spin. However, if the next spin results in a 0 then this money is lost completely.

    European wheel - there are 37 numbers, 1 to 36 and 0 on the wheel.

    Ficheur - In this format of the game the players get chips of different colors so that there is no discrepancy in the winnings. The mechanism of mechanically getting the separate colored chips is known as Ficheur.

    Five number bet - Same as the double 0 American Roulette but covers the bet of 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.

    High or low bet - A bet consisting of even money. Covers top- half (19-36) or the lower half (1 -18) (Outside bet).

    Inside bet - A bet on the numbers on the layout.

    La partage - similar to the prison rule. However, the player loses the half of the bet and the prison rule does not apply here. The rule applies to an outcome of 0 and on Odd/Even, Black/Red and Low/High bets.

    Non- value chip - the value of this chip depends on the buy in amount and as well as on the number of chips taken. For example if the buy in amount is $300.00 and the number of chips taken is 60, then the value of each chip amounts to $5.00. the value is determined by the “Table minimum bet” display of every table.

    Orphans - in European casinos a bet on the numbers 6, 34 and 17 is termed as Orphans due to their consecutive positions on the wheel but far away positions on the layout.

    Orphelins - similar to Orphans but applies to numbers that are immediate neighbors on the wheel but distant on the layout.

    Outside bet - term given to 1 on 1 bets on high/low, low/high and red/black bets and a 2 to 1 on column or dozen bets.

    Payout (Pay Out) - the amount paid to winners by the casino.

    Queen theatre - the seating layout of an electronic roulette have earned this name. 24 players can sit together in a Queen theatre Roulette. A total of 16 players play from the “theatre” and 8 players from the central part.

    Racetrack bets - commonly known as “Call bets”. The area in front of a croupier is called the racetrack area for betting on the Roulette wheel’s different sections.

    Roulight (Roulite) - it is one of the most new types of Roulette found today.     Transversale - street bet in French.

    Voisins du zero - quite common in casinos in Europe. This term is for bets on numbers on the wheel, which are neighbors of 0.
